Very original, very scary, I loved it

When I first heard about the film, I wasn't expecting much. Great, I thought, another film about a disgusting, bloody virus where the director expects everyone to ooh and ahh at all the gore, and hope this makes up for the lack of characterisation or script. However, upon actually watching the film, I was very surprised. Not only is Splinter full of scares, including - in my opinion - just the right amount of blood, it also packs what most films of its genre don't. It has characters we care about (an impressive feat, considering that two are armed criminals), a witty script, makes good use of its claustraphobic location and - especially rare - it is very well acted, particularly by Shea Whigham. The 'monster' is original yet in keeping with similar films which leaves the viewer impressed, but not confused and the way of killing it - for once - actually makes a lot of sense. i was particularly impressed by the fact that the characters actually behave like normal human beings, with emotions and fears, rather than mindless lemmings, walking into obvious danger at every turn. In conclusion, if you're sick to death - no pun intended - of watching scary films with a sore, dry throat from yelling 'why are you going in there, you stupid git?!' or 'it's behind you! Why can't you hear it??!!' then Splinter is perfect for you. It is original, clever and very frightening.
