The Justice VS Revenge debate.

dougthom from , 15th November, 2009

This is a high impact movie. It hits upon this issues of how much justic you can pay for, the court is just a theater adding further to my feeling to keep cameras out of the court room as we can do without celebrities judges/lawyers. This movie fans the flasms of vigilante justice due to misjustice. So imagine 'jigsaw' from the Saw movies is in jail orchastrating events outside when there is now way he could possibly be exacting his revenge. Does his the Justice VS Revenge debate. Like I am surprised that the Americans have not gone back to 'Hung, Drawn and Quatered' from Leathal Injection. What you dont appreciate is that on Death Row, the Lawyer Asset Strip you before you are put to death penniless. Another kind of Justice? In this movie you will take sides

I don't make deals with murderers!

A Customer from SW London, 29th November, 2009

Unlike one of the previous reviewers commented, this movie is not about choosing sides.Right and wrong are clear,in my opinion that is not what the movie is about.Shelton's (Butler)child and wife get slaughtered in front of his eyes and he doesn't take the news too well when his prosecutor, Rice (Foxx) says he has made a deal with one of the murderers.According to Shelton the case should have gone to trial and both should have paid the price for killing his family.Shelton does nothing for 10 years but when one of the murderer's is killed by lethal injection, he starts on a rampage to exact a lesson that he feels Rice must learn: which is not to make deal with murderers! In turn he becomes no better than the men that killed his family, killing off most of the people involved in the case. For me the movie explores an interesting notion: why anyone would assume that justice should exist and should prevail? The notion of right and wrong is clear cut, revenge is never right because it brings the person seeking revenge to the same level as the people who have wronged him, and while it might bring temporary relief it doesn't ever resolve anything.Rice made a decision regarding the case and while I don't agree with his decision it was a tough call to make because he risked losing the case and both criminals walking free.So I am afraid I am less sympathetic with the plight of Shelton.Obviously it's a tragedy his family were killed, but he wasn't exactly what I would call a law abiding citizen, but rather a mastermind in getting rid of people without having to be in their presence. Obviously people will take away different messages and notions after watching the movie, as it's one of those movies that gets you thinking long after you've seen the movie. I always love movies like that, so if this type of movie appeals don't miss it. Superb performances from Foxx and Butler.

Film of the year 2009!

RelentlessRob from , 22nd November, 2009

I walked into the cinema thinking this would be classic 'Death Wish' remake and I was going to add it to the avoid like the plague list along with Taxi, Alfie, The Italian Job, Gone in 60 Seconds and other films corprate Hollywood have ruined over the years rather than getting of their backsides and writing something new. I'm so glad I was wrong. Totally and completely wrong. Ok so the basis of the plot are very similar but the way this character developes is like watching the Punisher and Saw films at the same time with a hint of the Crow added for good measure. Very violent but at no point did I feel the violence was unjustified. I won't give anything else away. Just watch this film. Five stars.

In at the deep end...

chewyteeth from , 21st December, 2009

I am not going to give away the end of the film but I'd like to say that even though I thought the film was entertaining the ending doesn't live up...some of the action shots and mass destruction in the film is brilliant but there seems to be something missing for me. I was just getting warmed up for the ultimate revelations, the moment when the world is forced to notice the flaws in the wests democratic legal system.Basically the film starts with a heart wrenching crime and then spends the following scenes looking for some satisfaction, some sppeasement, and for me it never came. A good action film but it felt as though the writers ran out of steam after the violence peaked.

Excellent!

A Customer from West Lothian, 15th February, 2010

I was very impressed with this film. The film is all about getting revenge, but it's done in a very clever way and keeps you glued to the screen to see what's going to happen next. Definitely worth seeing, you won't be disappointed!

Very Good

Hayling from , 15th February, 2010

Very good movie but wrong ending, this will however be up for debate but I for one am a firm believer in what was dealt out was just. Every single 1st world country has a law system that needs the kind of shake up that this man was trying to give out.

Cracking film

Cabey from , 10th January, 2010

a great story with loads of twists and a very jumpy moment where everyone in the theatre nearly papped themselves simultaneously! loved it. quite gruesome in parts but made with a lot of imagination. only criticism was the ending was rushed and a bit of a let down
