I don't make deals with murderers!

Unlike one of the previous reviewers commented, this movie is not about choosing sides.Right and wrong are clear,in my opinion that is not what the movie is about.Shelton's (Butler)child and wife get slaughtered in front of his eyes and he doesn't take the news too well when his prosecutor, Rice (Foxx) says he has made a deal with one of the murderers.According to Shelton the case should have gone to trial and both should have paid the price for killing his family.Shelton does nothing for 10 years but when one of the murderer's is killed by lethal injection, he starts on a rampage to exact a lesson that he feels Rice must learn: which is not to make deal with murderers! In turn he becomes no better than the men that killed his family, killing off most of the people involved in the case. For me the movie explores an interesting notion: why anyone would assume that justice should exist and should prevail? The notion of right and wrong is clear cut, revenge is never right because it brings the person seeking revenge to the same level as the people who have wronged him, and while it might bring temporary relief it doesn't ever resolve anything.Rice made a decision regarding the case and while I don't agree with his decision it was a tough call to make because he risked losing the case and both criminals walking free.So I am afraid I am less sympathetic with the plight of Shelton.Obviously it's a tragedy his family were killed, but he wasn't exactly what I would call a law abiding citizen, but rather a mastermind in getting rid of people without having to be in their presence. Obviously people will take away different messages and notions after watching the movie, as it's one of those movies that gets you thinking long after you've seen the movie. I always love movies like that, so if this type of movie appeals don't miss it. Superb performances from Foxx and Butler.
