ME AND ORSON WELLES is set in the exciting world of the New York Theatre. Teenage student Richard Samuels (Zac Efron) lucks his way into a minor role in the legendary 1937 Mercury Theatre production of Julius Caesar, directed by a youthful Orson Welles (strikingly portrayed by newcomer Christian McKay.) Over the course of a magical week, Richard makes his Broadway debut, finds romance with an ambitious older woman, and experiences the dark side of genius after daring to cross the imperious, brilliant Welles. Richard has to grow up FAST.

Great performance from Christian McKay

McClennan from , 7th December, 2009

First off, I am a huge fan of Linklater’s work so any review I do about his work has to be read in that context. So I’m going to start by saying that I thought this was a lovely little film, rich in dialogue and acting whilst landing you perfectly in the chaos that must have surrounded Welles’ production of Julius Caesar. Christian McKay is magnificent as Welles, capturing his vocals and style with an often hilarious accuracy and although Zac Efron carries the story and emotions reasonably well it is McKay's Welles for which you should see the film. It's been tagged as a feel-good film and I must admit when the opening night performance comes it had me wishing I could have been there. Wonderful stuff.

ME AND ORSON WELLES

patpa from , 9th February, 2010

I found this film fascinating and would have given the star billing to Christian McKay who did an amazing job playing Orson Welles. The film centres round the attempt to save the Mercury theatre, and probably Welles career. For the last throw of the dice they put on Shakespeares 'Julius Caesar' with Orson as Brutus and I found the play almost as entertaining as the film. I could not understand the uniforms they wore and thought they had bought a lot of army surplus uniforms because money was scarce. However on looking at Orson Welles biography it states that the idea was to portray a fascist Rome under Mussolini, clever or what? A very factually correct film and I would RECOMMEND it

Me & Orson Welles

A Customer from Datchet, 13th March, 2010

I found Christian McKay wonderful as Orson Welles. He portrays the character brilliantly. It was a change for Zac Efron to play a grown up character. The other cast members were wonderful, but too many to name. The film seems to capture New York in the 1930s.

Really enjoyable film!

A Customer from Derby, 16th January, 2010

Although I am in the right age group to be a Zac Efron crazed fan, I actually went to see this film because I thought it looked good from the trailer, so my opinions won't be biased. Not knowing much but the basics about Orson Welles, I found it really intertesting to learn a bit about his early work. I also loved Christian McKays in the film, especially with the bits of comedy added in. I thought that Zac Efron played his part really well and he was completely different to any other films I've seen him in. Clare Danes was very good aswell. I love the Efron/Danes romance storyline too. It was a really enjoyable film and I left with a smile on my face. Really worth the cinema money! Will be recommending and buying the DVD!

Orson Welles, who he?

Zamy from , 4th January, 2010

Do many people under the age of 40 remember Orson Welles who died in the mid 1980’s and whose last film was released more than 10 years earlier? There were four people in the cinema when I watched and none of us were under 50 so looks like the younger demographic will not be watching unless they are knowledgeable, serious film fans. A pity, because this is a charming film with a great impersonation of Welles in his youth and lots of fun at the expense of those who engage with the performing arts as a career. Welles made several amazing films in his career as actor/director with ‘Citizen Kane’ always turning up at the top end of best ever film lists. This film covers the brief period when he was honing his skills in theatre/radio in New York in the mid 1930’s before getting his big chance in film. Recommended for film fans of all ages.
