Baron Manfred von Richthofen (Schweighöfer) is the most feared and celebrated pilot of the German air force in World War I. To him and his companions, air combats are events of sporty nature, technical challenge and honorable acting, ignoring the terrible extent of war. But after falling in love with the nurse Käte (Headey), Manfred realizes he is only used for propaganda means. Caught between his disgust for the war, and the responsibility for his fighter wing, von Richthofen sets out to fly again.

Looks great but a missed opportunity

A Customer from London, 5th November, 2009

With so few WW1 flying films being made was very excited to see this and although this looks visually great and is exciting, I felt a little let down. Although a really interesting real life charecter, I never really felt that connected or attached with Richthofen, the acting was average at best and it felt as if the love story was included to appeal to a wider audience base. Finally why must Joseph Fiennes always be chosen for American or in this case Canadian roles, the accent just sounds wrong. Could have been great and if interested at all in this area of history do see it but just don't raise your expectations too high.

Curious little film

balby from , 5th March, 2010

Terrible dialogue and unconvincing acting. Skewing of historical characters and events to create a farcical WWI narrative. The Aerial sequences are superb though. Its interesting to see the re-invention of Richthoffen by a German film studio to produce a palatable German war film. It has been cut by 30 mins after doing badly at the box office in Germany, it really shows. And sadly it seems one of the parts cut might have been a dogfight which is a real shame. Worth a look, but likely to be relatively unrewarding considering the potential of the subject matter.

Disappointing

tkg from , 25th February, 2010

Got bored after 15 minutes. It has no screen play, just a series on sentences trying to sound clever and profound. Didn't like any of the characters, except Joseph Fiennes who wanders in in a couple of places. Saw it through to the end but it just got worse.

I enjoyed this and learnt something

cestmoi from , 22nd February, 2010

I don't know how people can say it had no story (other reviewers) it is a true story a peice of history! maybe a little too sophisticated for some but a great insight into the german aristocracy and the real people that fought the war. There arent many films about the first world war so it was a refreshing change.
