A film about nothing

gyl from , 10th March, 2009

Matthew McConaughey plays legendary surfer Addington, who is being manipulated by his friends and bullied by his sponsers into starring in a reality tv show about surfers in a big brother style house with loads of playboy grade models kicking about. But he just wants to surf man, he's not feeling it. That's about it plotwise. McConaughey spends 99% of the movie shirtless, waiting for some decent (surf)break, there's plenty of bikini babes and everything goes along at an easy going pace. Stoners and McConaughey fans might like this but anyone wanting to engage their brain won't. I hate giving films 3 stars but even tho nothing really happens, the characters aren't believable and the acting's not great, i didn't consider turning it off either. I guess that's the point - the movie moves along at the same pace as the surfer's lives. It does make you long for a life so easy - travelling the world, hanging out with your friends, doing what you love; in Addington's case that's having sex with beautiful women, smoking pot and surfing. And displaying his 8 pack ALL the time. Think there's a bit of self parody in there from McConaughey's bongo playing days too. Be warned tho - the beautiful bodies on show may spark the urge to do sit ups.

Surprisingly entertaining

A Customer from Thatcham, 31st May, 2009

I was in the mood for something light to watch and this was perfect. But I have to say, if you've never hung out with surfers or had any surfer friends this movie will probably be lost on you.

For those of you understand the 'surfer way' you'll probably enjoy the story of a guy who just wants to surf but like most things these days, somebody wants to commercialise him/it.

The only thing I didn't appreciate is how the characters stereotype the surfer mentality. The surfers I know are all brilliant, intelligent people, not airheads partying all day long with a bunch of half naked woman at the poolside smoking weed (well some maybe but not all!).

By the end of the movie I wanted to move to California and spend the rest of my days chilling out - if they can do it why can't I?! I then remembered the lawn needed mowing and went to go see those lovely people up the road about borrowing their goats...

Lighthearted, entertaining and at least well acted.

easy going but would need remake

A Customer from Scotland, 7th October, 2009

Started this film with a relative open mind, it;s basically Matt McC shirtless and stoned all the way through. Wish there were more clear moments and the story more thought-through. Film has potential, with the right dialogues, less weed and stronger soundtrack a more enjoyable film. For a comedy not funny enough, for thought-provoking film not deep enough.

If we get to caught up in a reality game world we will lose the real thing

rescuedogsrock from from The New Forest, 14th January, 2010

A surfer is offerered lots of dosh, to live in a big brother style house, tv show, and to ride a surfing simulator so they can record his moves, but he is just not into it, and refuses In the real world, there is no waves for a record number of days, while he races around trying to bring back the waves, fellow surfers live in the house riding the ride. Eventually, he pretends to agree to do the TV show, but instead destroys the surfing game, and then the waves come back. Only a A-list film star who loves camping and lived for ages in a camper van, could star in this and have his production company make it. It seems like they had great fun and called it work. But I like the Etho's, never do the real thing and just do everything on simulators, I'm really not into that either.

utter twaddle

The overpriviledged offspring who spend their summers in Rock will appreciate this; the real surfers from Fistral will see through the tripe.
