The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency is a poignant and passionate story chronicling the adventures of Precious Ramotswe. Eminently sensible, she's the wise proprietor of the only female-owned detective agency in Botswana. She investigates cases, helps people solve problems in their lives, and falls in love with the highly respectable owner of a local garage.

Precious sells her late father's cows and moves to the city to become Botswana's finest - and only - female private detective. Her methods may be unconventional but she's got warmth, wit and canny intuition on her side, not to mention the support of her friends Mr JLB Matekoni, proprietor of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors and Mma Makutsi, the fastest-typing secretary in Gaborone.

Precious needs as much help as she can get, to solve the mysteries of a missing finger, a dubious Daddy, a cheating husband and as she heads into dark and dangerous territory of witchcraft.

Rich, Vibrant and Fun

If you've enjoyed the books, you should not be disappointed by this film. If anything I'd say I enjoyed it a little more. One is never sure reading a book about Africans written by a white Scotsman. Although this is directed by a white Englishman (one of Antony Minghella's very last films before his death), the colour and richness of African life is captured in a way rarely seen on-screen. It was filmed on location in Botswana, the music and graphics are African, and there isn't a white person in sight! The cast are wonderful, and the adaptation stays close to the original (albeit with the addition of an effeminate hairdresser character I don't recall from the book). Highly enjoyable, and at times very funny. There are no extra features included on the DVD.

No 1 Ladies Detective Agency

Excellent - I watched this after the TV series and having read the books. This film is excellently cast, filmed on location in Botswana and even better than the TV series. Precious Ramotswe is marvellous - just can't see enough of her! It does help if you have read some of the books to fill in the background and the characters enhance the stories.
