Studio: WALT DISNEY STUDIOS HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Run time: 599 mins
Genres: Comedy | Television

Released: September 01, 2008

One of the most popular television shows of the 1980s, THE GOLDEN GIRLS centered on four elderly single women living in the same house together, all played by sitcom veterans: sensible Dorothy (Bea Arthur), sweet but stupid Rose (Betty White), lusty Blanche (Rue McClanahan), and Dorothy's outspoken mother, Sophia (Estelle Getty). The programme was nominated for many Emmy and Golden Globe awards, and was consistently in Nielsen's top 10 for its entire run, garnering both critical acclaim and public popularity. It also proved daring for its time: not only did it tackle sensitive political issues, but it was a prime-time show whose main characters were much older than television's desired demographic. Series four collects all 26 episodes from the programme's fourth year, and features guest stars such as Quentin Tarantino, Julio Iglesias, and Bob Hope.

Great in every way...

A Customer from Guernsey, 25th August, 2008

This was the first full season that got me hooked on this show back in the late 80's. The writing, acting and sheer comic timing was simply wonderful and I still to this day watch the shows on DVD. Very fond memories. This season got more grown up after the first 3 and there are some real classic one liners and deliveries. The episode named 'The One That Got Away' is one of my favorites. 'He couldn't slip through your fingers now if you used a shoe horn'. Sophia saying of an old missed-opportunity of Blanche's that slipped through her fingers as she put it and who has piled on the pounds since she last saw him. I still crack up at that one. Estelle Getty is sadly missed. All 4 ladies were quite simply professional, talented actresses that deserved all the success they received.

My Favourite Senior Citizens

TheRebus from , 15th November, 2009

We have been working our way through the entire series, and the girls just never fail to entertain. On occasion my wife and I decide to take a break from renting feature films and turn to some of our favourite TV series from the past. The Golden Girls are tops as far as we are concerned: loopy ,zany, crotchety, eccentric - yes they are all of these and more. Glad we have these memories on DVD to remind us of these grand dames of comedy.

How can anything bad be said...?

thmshooper1981 from , 16th June, 2009

I've always loved The Golden Girls ever since I was 10/11... It was Friday night at 10pn on Channel 4 staple TV, never to be missed and then missed badly once they'd gone... So, being given the chance to watch the amazing ladies again is fantastic. How can anyone not be charmed by Rose, Blanche, Sophia and Dorothy? There was never anyhing nasty, no need for violence or over the top toilet humour, it was just funny and it came from the heart. I would have loved these woman to do one last story or reunion, but sadly, two of America's finest sitcom stars are now no longer with us... Maybe Rose and Blanche could get a show??? Network execs please consider it. Anyways season 4 just helps the show get better and better... Can't wait for season five to come to DVD...
