WE CAN BE HEROES is the predecessor to Chris Lilley's hilarious mockumentary creation SUMMER HEIGHTS HIGH. Once again Lilley stars as the five main characters, all nominees for the Australian Of The Year award, in a mockumentary format which flits between nominees as they await the ceremony. Daniel Sims is a 17-year old aspiring beat-boxing farmer who is about to undergo pioneering surgery to donate an ear-drum to his deaf twin brother Nathan... much to Nathan's disinterest. Phil Olivetti is an ex-police officer whose accidental bravery in a fly-away bouncy castle incident and subsequent fleeting fame, has given him delusions of grandeur (not helped by his 'impressive' hand-span). Middle-aged housewife Pat Mullins has found a novel way of overcoming her physical disability (she has one leg shorter than the other), 'rolling'. Imbued with a new purpose and support from her loving husband Terry, Pat plans to roll all the way from Perth to Uluru. Chinese physics student Ricky Wong has been nominated for his work in solar energy, although it soon becomes clear that his heart really lies in performing arts - in particular to his Chinese Theatre Group's production of 'Indigeridoo' a musical about Aborigine history. Fans of SUMMER HEIGHT HIGH will recognise Ja'mie King, a self-promoting private school girl. Nominated for her contribution to 'Global Vision', Ja'mie sponsors 85 Sudanese children (depending on how often they write to thank her) and takes part in a weekly '40 Hour Famine' for charity and to stay 'hot'.

What makes WE CAN BE HEROES stand out from the comedy crowd is Lilley's flawless talent for character-acting and mimicry. With relatively minimal costume/make-up, the show doesn't go to great lengths to disguise the fact that a grown man is playing a schoolgirl therefore each characters' believability is a marvel in itself. Subtle, innovative, surprisingly poignant and downright hilarious, it's no wonder that the show's cult following is steadily growing.

Australians of the Year

SuzannePolish from , 2nd May, 2009

Chris Lilley's precursor to 'Summer Heights High' is, if anything, even more acutely observed: the range of characters is wider, and the characters have a greater depth and spectrum of emotional states. This is not to criticise SHH, just to say that if you liked it, you'll probably love WCBH as much, or, like me, even more. I raise my glass to you Chris Lilley.

Chris Lilley is Brilliant as always

A Customer from Exeter, 19th March, 2010

Like all the great comedians, Lilley injects a poignant note into his brilliant characterizations. His characters are both funny and excruciatingly egotistical and, eventually, even evoke sympathy. They are, moreover, brilliantly observed, even though a couple of the scenarios, I felt, are almost too bizarre to be believable. No matter; he gets away with it because he is such a good actor and writer. This is not belly-laugh humour but wonderful, wry, character-driven humour and hugely enjoyable. This man is seriously talented.

Genius

A Customer from Paris, France, 22nd August, 2009

I have never been one to use the word genius lightly, infact I think the word is over used these days and the meaning is becoming lost. Chris Lilley is one. His portrayal of these different people is so wonderful and more to the point I believe in them. My favourite is Ja'mie who is also in SHH, but she is much more self centred and catty in WCBH. Her treatment of her mum and her refugee friend are so wrong but had me in tears of laughter. I want Chris Lilley to do more stuff.

Best new comedy in a long time!

JimiTheSaint from , 10th August, 2009

(well.... new to me anyway.) I was pleasantly suprised by how awesome this show actually is. Hilariously funny (even if, like me, you know nothing about Australia or Australian culture) and also strangely emotional in places. Chris Lilley has talent that amounts to more thanan entire cast of most sit coms, and he pulls all his different characters off flawlessly. Indeed, it's difficult to remember that he isn't actually a 17 year old boy or a middle aged woman, his acting is so superb. You will not be disappointed by this. I can't wait to see what this guy's future holds (I have Summer Heights High on the way...). Why are you still reading? Get renting!!!

Brilliant!

A Customer from London, 6th August, 2009

Before 'Summer Heights HIgh' came 'We can be heroes' an Australian comedy written by Chris Lilley, who also plays all the characters. Not only is Lilley extremely funny but he also manages to portray each character, from a middle aged western australian housewife to a chinese student, with great warmth and respect. This is a very rare comedy that will make you cry with laughter, and sometimes just make you cry. The more emotional, serious parts of the series are performed and written so well that the viewer develops a real affection for the characters. I can't remember any other comedy that entertains so well, but at the same time can be a real tear jerker-without being cheesy or sentimental. A definate must-watch!
