Frank Miller - there IS egg on your face!!

NativityInBlack from , 2nd January, 2009

Frank Miller needs to get another director to bring his visions to life, where Robert Rodriguez and Zack Snyder made brilliant adaptations of Millers graphic novels (Sin City and 300 respectivly), on this occasion Frank has gone it alone in the directors chair and the film feels....flat. The characters are 1 dimentional and feel totally detatched from the viewer, and most of the time from each other too. You nver feel any attatchment to Spirit and dont particularly care what happens to him, further since we dont really see any citizens there isnt much concern for 'his' city either. the acting is ropey and even the stylised visuals feel tired and unimaginative, where dashes of colour were powerful in Sin City the whole film feels awash with blandness. I highly recommend NOT seeing this film, 3/10 - total snooze fest

have you kinda missed the point?

Koppert from , 23rd June, 2009

OK I think some people have missed the point with this film. Its directed by Frank Miller, a genius comic book writer and this film isn't meant to be compared to other comic book adaptations, it IS a comic book but just showing as a film. It is not an adaptation. Beautiful women, comic book humour, comic book sets and lots of action. I love comic books, I love this film. If you don't like comic books its quite possible you won't.

not too bad

A Customer from Hull, 20th March, 2010

I found this film to be fun, and more then a little silly. I'm not quite sure if it was meant to be that way, but it was. Some parts I didn't get, because I haven't read the comics, which are hard to come by where I live. I had originally thought that the film was based on the character from the DC comics, my mistake... well, it led to a fun time. I would recommend this film, it's a great way to wile away an hour or so.

Dont waste your time on this.

Rickm from , 8th March, 2010

This film has some good names and a good idea however the pace of the movie is so slow it almost puts you to sleep. No thrills to be found here, watched it to the end but felt like turning it off half way through. Dont bother with this use your time on something else.

Watered Down Spirit

Wimpy from , 26th February, 2010

This looks quite stylish; a graphic novel brought to life. A modern film-noir. Sounds like Sin City? That's because this was also created by Frank Miller. But this is nowhere near as engaging. The hero is rather wet, and spends most of the film spouting the sort of cliched lines you find in bad 1940's gangster movies. The women are a) super bitches or b) downtrodden for love. The redeeming feature is Samuel L. Jackson, who plays his part just the right side of completely bonkers; switching costumes that serve no apparent point to the plot and giving long winded speeches.. Good looking mess that fails to hit the spot.

There's Sin City. Then there's plain sin...

mikehammond8 from , 16th February, 2010

It's often said that it can help to have an understanding of the source material. I reckon if that's the truth then there's something wrong - an adapted story should hold up independantly from it's source. It can work - I enjoyed 300 and Watchmen without knowing the source material. This doesn't work. Clearly trying to piggy back on the Sin City vibe, Frank Miller should have known better than let this crapball be made, let alone direct himself. If you enjoyed Sin City don't necessarily expect to enjoy this. In fact I guarantee you won't for this is atrocious. Incoherent storytelling, full of annoying performances and terrible gags. Simply one of the worst films I've seen in ages. Stay away.
