Shante (Vivica A. Fox), a glamorous advertising executive, is a heroine to all her girlfriends. She's the one they turn to for relationship advice--Shante seems to have all the answers when it comes to romance and understanding men. So when she catches her boyfriend Keith (Morris Chestnut) seeing another girl, Shante will stop at nothing to win back his affections and her own pride. She decides to implement a 10-day plan to eliminate her competition and get her man to mend his cheating ways. As she puts her plan into action, she speaks directly to the camera, very analytically talking us through every trick in the relationship bag. Shante will 'accidentally' run into Keith with a gorgeous Other Man; she'll ignore his phone calls; she'll even seduce him and then cruelly walk out before the deed is done.
Problem is, Keith doesn't fall for Shante's games, and instead he gives her a taste of her own medicine. His friend Tony (Anthony Anderson), who is almost as strategic and savvy as Shante, is advising Keith behind the scenes. This self-conscious tale of conniving, manipulative modern love hearkens back to the film director Mark Brown wrote in 1997, HOW TO BE A PLAYER.

Radio Times

Mark Brown, the screenwriter of Def Jam's How to Be a Player, turns his attention from men playing the field to women playing games in this sharply observed romantic comedy, which marked his directorial debut. A likeable and intelligent movie about relationships, it's as perky and attractive as its female protagonists — a group of sassy African-Americans who turn to their best friend Shanté (a delightful Vivica A Fox) whenever man trouble dampens their spirits. However, when Shanté's boyfriend Keith is caught with her arch rival, it's time for the love guru to follow her own “Ten Day Plan” to get him back in line. Spiked with astute observations on modern romance and gender relations, this well-acted and funny battle of the sexes unfolds like an A-Z guide to dating. Its wryly amusing dialogue and familiar scenarios are likely to strike a chord with many female viewers, while men and women alike may learn a few sneaky new lessons in emotional points-scoring.

Girls' Night In

Vanessa from Blackburn, 21st May, 2004

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The cast acted well, the storyline was strong, and for once, no swearing.

This is definitely one for the ladies. It accurately depicts the sort of games people in relationships play, and the trouble that can lead to. This movie's strength lies in the fact, that it gets equally well into the guy's head as it does the girl's.

Just one warning, girls, don't let your man watch this, you wouldn't want him getting any ideas!!

Very funny comedy featuring Morris Chestnut and Vicia Fox. I enjoyed watching this movie because it's different from most romantic comedies. And the DVD is packed with extra features such as making of, music videos and much much more. Highly recommended!

Two can play that game

A Customer from London, 19th June, 2009

I loved the movie so much I watched it twice. Vivica A Fox was a convincing vixen who played the game well. Very good story line and well cast. The story could be applied to all women regardless of their background. I'm certainly looking forward to other material produced by Mark Brown.

Two can play that game

This is a definite one for ladies to watch on girly night in. There's laughs aplenty as the two lead characters (Fox, Chestnut) battle it out in the ultimate game playing. With Fox's character narrating the storyline, it makes it easy to follow without dumbing it down for viewers and it adds a refreshing twist. And don't forget the eye candy for both the men and ladies!
