Creepy Plot + Great Performances = One of the best thriller/horrors I've seen

David Gray from Clackmannanshire, Scotland, 27th August, 2004

From reading 'Stephen King's Danse Macabre' I saw what a passion Stephen King had for the haunted house premise in horror fiction. If one watches 'The Shining' you may think he already did his haunted house story (after all what is a hotel?), however, this movie is a much different creature that goes beyond cabin fever, telepathy and dives stright into insanity.

In the first chapter of the tale, dread sets while we learn the histories of all our participants and invariably side with Dr. Joyce Reardon, superbly played by Nancy Travis. The second chapter is two hours of gut wrenching taut tension and the end neatly closes up King's tale in one of the finest climaxes he's ever written either in prose or for the screen.

This film also boasts some of the best and most convincing CGI i've seen to date. It was supernatural only when need be other than that it looked utterly convincing and frightening. Another thing that resonates after watching 'Rose Red' is that this is indeed one of his nastiest collection of characters not since 'The Stand' did he even come close to having a contingent of nasty characters such as this but even still they are all likeable in at least one way or another. The undertones of religion and evil hit home harder than ever before. I'm not going to give anything away but if you analyze it you won't find clear cut good guys and clear cut bad guys.

Stephen King has delivered one of the most bone-chilling suspenseful mini-series of all time. The format seems truly to have been created for his work.

Dreadful acting, dull, predictable, unbelievable, overley long and with only average special effects this is one of the worst Stephen King adaptions I have ever seen (alongside The Tommyknockers and the one with the Cat people which was so teeth-achingly bad can't even remember its name). I honestly felt I had wasted several hours of my life watching his and drifted off to sleep several times, even during the 'exciting culmination'. If you want good Stephen King on film (which can be excellent - he is a magnificent storyteller), watch the Shining, Carrie, Stand by Me or the Shawshank Redemption - even IT or The Green Mile are miles ahead of this dreadful, derrivative 'horror'

Watch this on a dark cold night

A Customer from Wakefield, England, 28th August, 2004

Another Steven King book gets the American mini-series treatment. Here luckly there are no commercial breaks just one long thrill, so the cliffhanger bits are a bit pointless.
No real famous stars so more money is spent on the film and the characters are more realistic.
The way the DVD is presented actually makes you wonder if there is a real rose red and that this film actually has its toes in realism which makes it all the better as far as I am concerned.
Dont watch this on a summers night when you have only got an hour or so stick it on a cold winters night and watch it all the way through.

Where do they find all these ancient indian burial grounds...?!

Darth Egregious from London, 14th July, 2005

Seems you can't walk down a suburban street in the States without tripping over Geronimo's tombstone. Not as good as It but better than Storm of the Century; maybe on par with The Stand. Still, I found the plot logic had holes you could drive a few rounds of golf through. Nancy Travis does well in subverting her wholesome image, but Julian Sands walks away with all the best lines as the campest psychic since Russell Grant.

king is the best!

A Customer from Liverpool, 2nd October, 2009

this is by far one of the greatest haunted house stories ever. stephen king as only he knows how spins a tale of fear, murder, madness and human nature at its best and worst. all set in a huge stately house that has developed a conciousness of its own from having so many ghosts in it, and now has the ability to build itself and change its rooms! a funhouse that eats people, fantastic! though not all the psychics end up eaten & dead at the end, (theres one in particular that i think everyone will want to see die but doesnt) the domoneering loony bitch that set it all up just to keep her job and make money does get it. the effects are first rate and the atmosphere hooks you immidiately, the ghosts shy at first leap out at you. theres also a bonus that has a spookily real yet bogus documentary on the fictional house that could fool anyone that hasnt seen the movie. i reccomend this to any loyal king fan and any horror appriciators out there. enjoy!

I found this movie a bit drawn out a shorter version could have done the job. All in all it was watchable.
