Jimmy Stewart and Carole Lombard star as newlyweds in this delightful romantic dramedy. Stewart plays Johnny Mason, an amiable New York City lawyer who has put his career in jeopardy by refusing the hand of his employer's daughter. His beloved wife, Jane (comically portrayed by Lombard), is despised by Johnny's mother (Lucile Watson), who takes it upon herself to move in with the young couple. Things go from bad to worse when Jane gives birth to a child the family can ill afford. When the infant becomes sick on New Year's Eve, the pressure falls on Johnny to acquire medication from out of state in order to save both his child and his marriage. Impeccably directed by John Cromwell (GODDESS, ABE LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS), MADE FOR EACH OTHER combines laughter with tears in what is a classic, heartwarming example of true family entertainment.

Radio Times

Doctor Charlton Heston returns from patching up wounded soldiers in Korea and must decide between a practice in the rich area of Pittsburgh or the nearby mining community. He chooses money and Lizabeth Scott until a catastrophe at the mine makes him rethink his priorities. Made before Heston acquired his epic-hero status, this moral medico-melo was panned by critics and was a major flop. “No producer credit is given,” noted Variety. “Under the circumstances it's not surprising.” Heston's wife, billed as Lydia Clarke, has a minor role.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Elongated cabaret sketch, a Brooklynesque comedy of flashy brilliance but limited general interest.

Great Melodrama! Same about the Picture Quality

ToriLady from from Edinburgh, 17th November, 2007

This was a 1930's Melodrama of the highest order, but unfortunately the print was really awful, so look out for this one when it's digitally remastered in the future.

Starts off screwball, but ends as a tear jerker

A Customer from Norfolk, England, 3rd October, 2007

One major technical problem I had with this film was the appalling sound, I turned the volume up as high as possible but it was still incredibly quiet. I love the films of both Carole Lombard and James Stewart, so I was interested to see this title but it is a very peculiar hotch potch. The opening 15 minutes of the film seemed to be shaping up to a screwball romantic comedy, but then after about an hour it suddenly turned into a melodramatic tear jerker. There are definately interesting aspects to the film, if you are prepared for a very lopsided narrative.

It's not that bad really - is it?

Edgar Jephcote from Notts, UK, 14th May, 2007

*1939* - The Greatest Year in movie history! This film isn't much of a spectacle in the light of other films on offer that year, namely 'Gone With The Wind', 'GoodBye Mr Chips', 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' and so on - but I still found some small enjoyment here, though regretably not much. From that first scene when James Stewart walks into the office to a party atmosphere welcome home, you just know this is going to be a bit cheap. But it's really not that bad; It's quite a dark film to be fair, but I also found lots of moments to chuckle about, though I doubt this is intended to be a comedy. The fed up cook/housemaid scene is pretty funny, and not forgetting - 'I hope Higgins beats Higgins' - Classic! In short, 'Made for each other' doesn't really have much direction or purpose - but if like me, you crave films starring James Stewart and Carole Lombard and know what to expect, then just go right ahead.

For Die Hard James Stewart Fans

BlueStringSoup from Hertfordshire, 19th April, 2005

Stewart plays John Mason, an ambitious lawyer working for a law firm. He marries a girl soon after meeting her, much to the disapproval of his mother. A child is born and the happy couple start to struggle. The story then focuses on problems encountered climbing up the ladder at work and culminates in a ridculously overblown segment concerning the search for a serum when the child falls ill.

A very thin story with Stewart looking like he is still learning his trade.
