A highly-classified video tape confiscated by the U.S. military shows the devastating effects of a monster attack on New York City. Crudely shot on handycam by a group of friends at a party, the film quickly evolves into a blow-by-blow account of the most surreal and terrifying ordeal of their young lives. The first 20 minutes or so could easily be mistaken for some glossy American soap opera, populated as it is by successful, good-looking people. As the camera clumsily weaves its way around the party guests, we're treated to snippets of conversations that provide a back story to the characters' lives. Suddenly and without warning, a series of earth-shattering tremors rock the city, causing mass panic in the streets below. It soon becomes apparent that this is no natural disaster as the city is ripped apart by some gargantuan and malevolent force.
Creature features such as this are often only as good as their special effects will allow, and CLOVERFIELD scores very highly in that department. The visuals are simply stunning and so seamlessly executed that they'll have you ducking for cover. In fact, some of the effects are so uncomfortably realistic--buildings collapsing into plumes of smoke, bits of debris falling from the sky--that they will inevitably evoke painful memories of 9/11. The filmmakers were careful not to reveal the monster too early on in the film, as the anticipation of seeing it for the first time is half the fun. Instead, they tease the viewer with flashes of a giant tail or leg in between skyscrapers. This makes the final reveal that much more satisfying, as the unknown becomes known. But where the film tantalises, it also frustrates as it offers no answers to the most obvious questions; what is this thing? How did it suddenly appear out of nowhere? What's its beef with New York City? Ironically, it's this very inscrutability that makes the film so intriguing, as we are reminded that wanton acts of destruction--such as the terrorist attacks of 9/11--always leave questions unanswered. Shot in real-time in a cinema verite style similar to THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, CLOVERFIELD's exploitation of the digital video format is a bold move that pays off handsomely.

A load of rubbish

A Customer from Croydon, 10th September, 2008

My one lasting memory of this film is feeling sick because of all the hand heldphotography. Same premise as Blair Witch but with a bigger budget.

the type of hollywood we don't want to see

A Customer from Luton, 16th September, 2008

A rubbishfilm trying to scare the audiance, interesting and reminicent of 9/11by trying to conjure and replicate a sci fi 9/11 but really will there be anything to shock people after 9/11, i doubt it. in general the quality of the picture on blu-ray is very dissapointing and i have a 42' hd plasma. There's not alot of extra content which is a rip off considering this film would cost £20+ to buy at some places, and finally this type of film is not what we want to watch comeing from hollywood it has low budgjet written all over it 1 star for the hype otherwise I would really give it a 0

Give your Sub a workout

A Customer from Heathrow area, 5th July, 2008

This film is a little slow to get off the ground but once the first 20 mins is out of the way is great fun. If you own a good system, it really will give your Sub a great workout to thge same sort of levels us Basshead's previously enjoyed from Flight of the Pheonix and War of the Worlds. IMO it's worth it for the soundtrack alone

Excellent film

A Customer from Suffolk, 11th November, 2008

Excellent film with fantastic special effects and it looks great on Blu-Ray. Camera work is not so vomit inducing as led to believe. Much better than any of the previous offerings in this genre such as Godzilla, independence day etc.

thrills and spills

A Customer from Greenock, 10th November, 2008

i know where many are coming from in slating this film as it turns hollywood action blockbusters on its head by trying to be filmed as low budget, but by the very fact that it only allows you to see what the protagonists see it allows us to be far more immersed in the first person and works brilliantly. In many ways instead of being a redux of blair witch i find more parallels with Jaws. Very very well directed and lots of incidental material you only pick up from repeated viewings. I really never thought i would have liked this film but a very plreasant surprise and good old fashioned entertainment

A Godzilla meets the camcorder experience.

A Customer from Edgbaston, 10th November, 2008

If you are turned off by the idea of watching a film which has a single point of filming (i.e. that you are seeing what a single handheld camera is recording), then don't even bother with this one. The premise for the film is that a bloke is recording a going away party in Manhattan when something happens outside. You then spend the rest of the movie watching what unfolds through the lense of that single camcorder. In an effort to keep this feeling at all true (accepting the premise that with all the destruction going on someone would keep filming) it does mean that sometimes events happen off camera and the camera only pans round in reaction to that something happening. However, I did enjoy the film - much to my surprise. It is not scary and I was never entirely carried away by it, but at no point did it bore me. Oh, you also have to accept that this is not directly a film about Manhattan being attacked by something. These people are suffering the attack, so the story follows their personal attempt to find and rescue one of the group whilst the attack goes on around them. What that means is that you get glimpses of the bigger battle going on against the Thing attacking Manhattan, but only as it impacts upon this small group.

excellent

A Customer from leigh, 25th October, 2008

Blairwitchy? Not in the slightest. Yes, it's filmed 'that' way but the quality is phenominal and it is totally totally convincing in every way. Impressive throughout. Excellent!!
