interesting little movie

nerfeezah from , 17th August, 2009

Little ashes is a film based on the real-life friendship between the sensitive poet Lorca and eccentric artist Dali and focuses on the much debated nature of their relationship that occurred between the two young men when they met at university. i was rather hesitant about this film but as a curious Robert Pattinson fan I decided to give this a try. I thought it was a beautiful little movie and was impressed by the acting talent of all the cast in particular Javier Beltran who plays Lorca. His sensitive, yearning portrayal of a young man in love was heart wrenching and moved me to tears. He is able to convey so much with one look – he owns this film. Robert Pattinson was the weak point in the film for me. His Spanish accent was wobbly and it seemed he could never get under Dali’s skin and show what made him tick although it would be an impossible task for any actor. I admire the way he threw himself into role with gusto – he has an actor’s fearlessness for the unknown. Matthew McNulty was a highlight. I had not heard of him before but he was fantastic and his accent made me believe he was a born and bred Spaniard. I must admit the film is not perfect – it falls a little flat in places and the time jumps are slightly confusing – but there are gorgeous moments too such as the moonlit water dip. I think the film needed subtitles which are not provided which is a shame because the dialogue is not always clear. The DVD extras were good however Robert is conspicuously absent for the interviews which I thought was a shame. The extras give a good insight into the film and script which I appreciated. Overall, I enjoyed this rental.

The story centres around Frederico Garcia Lorca's yearning for Salavador Dali. The enamoured poet almosts bullies the immature self-centred artist into a relationship, his increasing desperation mirrored by his female friend's unrequited love for him. Ultimately the country's political unrest will decide their future.

Moving portrayal of love and art

I would thoroughly recommend this film, even to those with no prior knowledge/interest in Dali and Lorca. This is not to say the film didn't have its faults - Robert Pattinson's Spanish accent came and went throughout the film, (and often sounded more Russian or Indian!) and some of the jumps in time and place were sudden and unexplained. However, if seen as a vignette of the characters' lives and work, rather than something with a linear plot, it was truly inspiring. Javier Beltran, for me, was the highlight, serenely portraying all of Lorca's yearning, love, respect and understated but deep-rooted passion for Dali, his family, his beliefs and his country. An extremely brave performance from Robert Pattinson allowed us to glimpse some of the many layers of Dali's extremely complicated personality, from his eccentricity and self-centred ambition, to all of his insecurities; shunning acceptance, though fearing rejection. In keeping with the real-life debate on the nature of their relationship (though not Lorca's own feelings, which are well documented) the film keeps Dali's thoughts and feelings wonderfully ambiguous throughout, so that even by the end, you aren't really sure what Lorca meant to him. I thought this was very fitting, and allowed the viewer to draw their own conclusions rather than the film-makers putting their own definitive stamp on history. All in all, a deeply moving love story, full of tenderness and heartbreak - you will need a box of tissues to hand for the end!

I actually liked it. It's a little odd, but come on, so was Salvador Dali!!! I think it's quite interesting and Robert Pattinson does a good job portraying someone so ecentric.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT...i must admit that i rented this film as i LOVE Robert Pattinson and wanted to see some of his other films. i didn't know what to expect, so watched with an open mind and i totally fell in love with the story. My favourite kind of love story is an unrequited, tragic one(slightly worrying!) and this one really captured the feelings of longing, loneliness, sadness and regret. i think that this is a love it or hate it film judging by the reviews of others but i think that it's totally worth watching, even if just to make up your own mind. The gorgeous Pattinson really conveys the emotions of the character. you really have to forget that 'its Robert Pattinson' and allow yourself to get involved with the over the top character he is portraying. It seems that many other reviewers concentrated too much on who he is rather than who he was being. The story is really touching and if you have and interest in art or love or both you shouldn't be dissapointed. As i said...LOVED IT.

I enjoyed this film although it did take me a while to get into it, felt it was rather slow, Robert Pattinson makes this film what it is, his acting is really great. Overall it was a good film.
