In 1997, writer-director Michael Haneke (HIDDEN) made the controversial Austrian thriller, FUNNY GAMES, about two young men who terrorize a family on holiday. A decade later, Haneke was convinced by producer Chris Coen to bring the story to America, filming a nearly word-for-word, shot-for-shot English-language version, even re-creating the locations and sets as obsessively as possible. Even with the passing of a decade, the material has lost none of its power and has been critically acclaimed.

Shortly after Ann (Naomi Watts), George (Tim Roth), and Georgie (Devon Gearhart) arrive in their country home, Peter (Brady Corbet), an eerily polite young man dressed all in white, including odd white gloves, appears on the doorstep, asking Ann if he can borrow some eggs for their neighbour. Peter is joined by Paul (Michael Pitt), and the Leopold-and-Loeb-like duo are soon doing horrible things to Ann, George, and Georgie, torturing them both physically and psychologically, for no apparent reason other than they can, referring to the whole thing as a game. And the biggest game of all is whether the family will be alive at the end.
FUNNY GAMES is an intense experience, driven by Haneke's careful manipulation of both the film itself and the audience. He's trying to shake up the viewer, even having Paul address the audience directly several times, with Paul fully aware of what he is doing and how the audience is most likely responding. And in one unforgettable scene, Haneke pulls the cathartic rug right out from under the viewer, playing with the actual medium of cinema in an infuriating and ingenious way. Roth and Watts give outstanding performances as the victims, matched by Pitt and Corbet's deeply unsettling creepiness. Just as Peter and Paul (who also call themselves Tom and Jerry and Beavis and Butt-Head) alternate between calm and violent, the soundtrack alternates between classical music by Handel, Mozart, and others and hardcore punk from John Zorn and Naked City. Though difficult to watch, FUNNY GAMES is ultimately a rewarding and illuminating film, though not for the squeamish.

Waste of time.

Stuartrugby from , 31st August, 2008

I really hated this film. Sometimes you find a film that is so bad you turn it off before it's over, this in my opinion is much worse because you get sucked in, you reach a point where you want to turn off but can't because you've got to far and you have to see the outcome in the hope that the ending redeems itself. It doesn't. After the film was over i felt very disappointed and that I had wasted two hours. The film not only had no point or message to it but it also had no structured plot or atmosphere, it felt like the director was trying to create a surreal piece of art but didn't pull it off. Some of the more surreal scenes didn't really fit or work with the style it appeared to be going for. I didn't like the lack of audio used in the film or some of the more unusal camera shots that like the film seemed pointless. It breaks all the rules of a typical American horror and if your into that sort of thing this film might appeal but I think some of the rules are required to enjoy it, but i don't think the audiance are supposed to enjoy this film, which is why it wasn't for me.

What was this all about then ?

brushless from , 5th October, 2008

Well, my wife and I sat and watched the first 15 minutes together, and then I went to bed in disgust leaving my wife to watch the rest of it alone ! She says that she couldn't decide whether this film is pure genious or complete rubbish, afterall, there is a fine line between the two ! The plot was extremely strange and no explanations were offered by the director at all , if you like having to guess then you would enjoy this film. It is one of the strangest films my wife has ever seen and extremely frustrating in places, you will find yourself screaming at the characters !

Sickeningly enjoyable

charliechalk93 from , 9th December, 2009

I enjoyed this film even though I know I shouldn't have. The premise was pretty simple, and has been portrayed a hundred times before, but it was effective and did what it set out to do- make the viewer feel uncomfortable and immersed. Michael Pitts performance was in my opinion amazing, his films have always appealed to me (The dreamers, Hedwig) but he gives a frightening, realistic and gripping performance in 'Funny Games'.

Absurd Games more like......

JustAFanTC from from Leeds, 4th December, 2009

Apparently this film is a remake, very much like movies such as the grudge, the ring, etc. Purely to bring a wider audience into it's fold. A family escapes to a golfing resort, only to encounter two young men who want to play some games with them. Games which take a savage, violent turn. This film has a huge amount of potential but really fizzles out after all of it's shocks and action. I think what is more frustrating is the fact that the two young men never seem to have a motive. Which I know is a more scary notion but this film doesn't really execute it well and instead of their victims wanting revenge, you want to join in on beating them until they grow up. It's an ok film I guess, just a little lacking and annoying at times

Pretentious Tripe

EddM from from Bournemouth, 3rd August, 2009

While the story of Funny Games lends itself some potential to actually be a very good horror movie, the way it is executed is far too pretentious and forced-artsy-fartsy for my liking. The premise was the only thing that kept me engaged enough to watch it the whole way through. The very long, drawn out, often partly obscured shots of almost nothing happening was clearly intended by the director to be a lofty method of portraying a feeling of ill-ease, but ended up having the exact opposite effect by draining all emotion. These are contrasted with some very 'shock' scenes and plot twists which did clearly not achieve the director's vision. The occasional breaking of the fourth wall by the main antagonist, and then some weird 'time travel' effect through use of a remote control inside the scene only served to pull me further out of the film and left me complaining when I should be watching. It's sad to see a spectacular actor like Tim Roth wasted in such a fashion. Avoid.
