After suffering an injury during a routine patrol, hardened sergeant TK Poole is granted a one-month leave to visit his fiancée. But when an unexpected blackout cancels all flights out of New York, TK agrees to share a ride to Pittsburgh with two similarly stranded servicemen: Cheever, an older family man who longs to return to his wife in St. Louis, and Colee, a naive private who's pinned her hopes on connecting with a dead fellow soldier's family. What begins as a short trip unexpectedly evolves into a longer journey. Forced to grapple with old relationships, broken hopes and a country divided over the war, TK, Cheever and Colee discover that home is not quite what they remembered, and that the unlikely companionship they've found might be what matters the most.

Man, was that a brilliant movie ...

Benhuczek from , 18th December, 2009

OK, let's get the downside over and done with immediately ... the lighting was severely dodgy in a couple of scenes. And that's it. The upsides ... on so many levels .. this movie is brilliant. Let's keep it simple for those who just like sitting; a road movie. For those who like it a bit more complicated. the character development and interaction, while a bit predictable, was finely constructed and honed. I haven't watched it again, but I can't remember a single redundant line or scene. Speaking parts:- Rachel seems to have the lion's share but frankly the other two; the blokes (can't remember their names, but they really look familiar!) don't need to speak, when they are the principals, they take over the screen, are great. The Afgan war from an American perspective, yes, there's a bit of that; but only when relevant. So, not just worth a look, but worth a detour. Glad I made the effort. I'm tempted to google this Neil Burger chap whose film it basically is, to see if he's done anything else noteworthy. Can't say fairer than that.

Fine low-key ensemble piece

Rialto from , 27th November, 2009

Three of my favourite actors (Robbins, McAdams, Pena) together in one film - I had too see it. Very low-key ensemble piece about Iraq veterans returning home on leave, and not getting quite the welcome they hoped for. Keep an eye out for Rachel McAdams, if she makes the right choices she will be a BIG star.

What a gem!

A Customer from Dorset, 13th March, 2010

I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this film but I really enjoyed it. The actors were good individually and also worked well as a trio. It was really quite a simple story of how 3 soldiers on leave come together through circumstances beyond their control and strike up a friendship. They each have different issues to deal with along their journeys as well as some problems. The film could have been so easily spoilt with the usual 'nice, neat ending' but it was more of a natural one rather than the obvious. I liked the way their friendship developed as the film progressed and some parts were quite amusing. Each one of the leading actors was most endearing. Rachel in particular was very good. The script was also very natural and not at all contrived. I would recommend this for a change. No fancy gimmicks, no special effects or blood-thirsty scenes just a good human-interest film.

Excellent film, brilliant acting

A Customer from Warks, 5th February, 2010

Great film, not quite what I expected, but excellent. Superb acting always helps, but this is a good script and avoids over sentimentality. Well worth watching.

A Lovely Wonderful Film

A Customer from Bristol, 7th January, 2010

This is a gentle comedy, similar in style and tone to Sideways. I think it's got mixed reviews because not all the plot strands are tied up at the end and, although in hindsight a lot of the plot is road trip typical, it's played out by the leads in a wonderfully fresh way. Time is allowed for you to get to know the characters and you end up really liking them. It's laugh out loud funny at times and at others incredibly poignant. It's a shame this didn't get a cinema release because it deserves a higher profile.

understated

A sad and funny tale. A road movie with a difference, with a good script, strong characters and great acting. It also has something to say about modern USA which it does without spoon feeding you the message. I really enjoyed this one- much more than I expected!
