Not a perfect film...

A Customer from Winchester, 4th February, 2009

..but as near perfect a set of performances as we could hope for. A gripping drama which prompts lots of questions afterwards and allows scope for alternative explanations, Doubt after all being the name of the movie. For me the screenplay didn't always seem true, but the cast made that all but irrelevant and for fans of Meryl Streep (who isn't?) you won't be disappointed. Brad (sorry, Philip, but for me you will always be Lebowski's butler) was also outstanding, but perhaps the best performance of all was the utterly convincing Amy Adams.

Academy Wins, As actors save film

VIDEOMONSTER from , 14th February, 2009

There is a moment in this movie where Meryl Streep's Sister Aloysius says 'In ancient Sparta, battles were won by those who shout the loudest'. This is perhaps the key thing of the movie, everybody ends up shouting, in fact the shouting contest winner is Meryl Streep, who will probably edge Angelina and co at the oscars. The viewers are lucky that this decent script and direction have quality actors on board, because it is the only way this movie would be talked about, simply because it is very dull. I just about wanted to leave shouting expletives but waited to see the end just to see the outcome and was disappointed by that just as much as this movie. Over-rated and one for the awards, watch only if you really have nothing better to do.

The most boring film I've seen this year

Zedders from from Salford, 18th February, 2009

This is probably the most boring film I've seen this year. It never really went anywhere, and you find yourself at the end wondering if he did it. I love most films, but this was poor, I wouldn't waste your time.

Plays with your emotions: Excellent.

Rip from Manchester, 14th July, 2009

Well written script with excellent acting. A tight and well considered tale which shows real insight into its subject. This film treats the subject in a new and interesting way with no lurid scenes or courtroom drama, just the experiences and interactions of the people around the theme. I don't want to say too much more, give too much away and spoil it.

should have been left in the theatre

A Customer from tyne & wear, 5th March, 2010

Disappointed with this film and surprised that Streep nominated. Some other reviews containing spoilers sum it up in a sentence and good acting all round doesn't make up for a film that never really gets going and leaves you wondering did he or didn't he? And do you care anyway?

An interesting plot. Questioning the catholic church in terms of it's unequal approach to men and women (Men have the power), priests and children and morality. A fine performance from Merryl streep and phillip seymour hofmann. The film is let down by a poor ending (IMHO). Worth a watch though.
