Sky Movies

A more cerebral thriller than your standard sci-fi fare, Mostow strikes just the right balance between in-your-face action and social comment on technology as a lifestyle.

Mediocre Futuristic Style Movie

A Customer from SW London, 26th September, 2009

This movie is your run of the mill, futuristic type.Nothing new.And absolutely forgetful. Not a bad watch if you have time to kill and nothing to do. Wanna know what it's about:Willis is out and about trying to save humanity from itself, but resolving the problem that humans are now living their lives through roboty things called surrogates.

When Aesthetics and Thematics Collide

AnAmericaninScotland from , 1st October, 2009

Abandoning subtlety for a sledgehammer, the film's overarching theme of the futility of a life experienced through technology fails to embrace the complexity of its central question. Surely, good comes from the surrogates, just as good obviously comes with the Internet. Yet, the discussion of discretion and moderation is never broached, Rather, the film embraces this theme from a fallacious 'either-or' mentality, thus failing to have any significant impact on the viewer, who most likely relied upon the Internet to view trailers and research local theatres and showtimes. It's this hypocrisy that irks me most. With its mouth it rails against technology and its numbing effect on humanity, but with its hands it reveals the necessity of digital technology to animate and realise much of what is seen. It utilises many hyperrealism techniques to create its simulacra, but never any realism techniques (save for the occasional and poorly chosen deep focus shot, though with its punchy editing pace, what's the point?) Its subtext of hyperreality displacing reality falls flat because out of the myriad realism tools at the filmmakers' disposal, they rely solely on make-up to mark the distinction - yet only is it considered 'ugly' is because of its juxtaposition with its idyllic simulacrum. Not unlike the hypocrisy of the central antagonist, the hyperrealist film of digital simulation decries the very medium it relies upon. What once had potential for an engaging argument is now merely Hollywood pulp.

The usual average you get these days

A Customer from darien, ct, 6th October, 2009

This is the type of film that Van Damme or Seagal would have got in years gone but now due to the dumming down and lack of decent ideas coming out of the studios Bruce Willis now gets them. It is a watchable film but very thin on the ground for story and you find yourself wanting the end to come along quickly. Willis is really the only thing thats going for it along with a couple of decent action scenes. Not anywhere near as good as films he was making 10 or 12 years ago like The Fifth Element and Twelve Monkeys. Just wait for the dvd.

Not bad, but not good either

ashbz from , 17th March, 2010

This is not a memorable film. Thankfully Bruced Willis saves the day (literally) being the main lead otherwise this would die a death. Whilst the story is trying to be a clever thriller, it is quite obvious who the killer is from the start and the action never really kicks off in the way you would expect it to having good ol Brucy in the hot seat. I would say it's ok to watch, you wouldn't wasting your time, I just wouldn't recommend spending your hard earned cash on it.

Fairly average sci-fi thriller

A Customer from Antrim, 16th March, 2010

This promised to be an interesting story in a world where people no longer live their own lives, but remain at home living them through the eyes of their robot likenesses, who are of course younger and better-looking. Unfortunately, it simply lacked something I couldn't quite put my finger on. On the whole it was reasonably watchable, but I have seen better sci-fis than this.

Surprised fan

A Customer from internet, 10th March, 2010

I was really expecting this to be awful (especially because of the critical panning it received on release), however I was quite surprised as to how good it was. Bruce was on good form and it didn't out stay its welcome. Perfect nights in entertainment.
