Coraline Jones is a girl of 11 who is feisty, curious, and adventurous beyond her years. She and her parents have just relocated from Michigan to Oregon. Missing her friends and finding her parents to be distracted by their work, Coraline tries to find some excitement in her new environment. She is befriended--or, as she sees it, is annoyed--by a local boy close to her age, Wybie Lovat and visits her older neighbors, eccentric British actresses Miss Spink and Forcible as well as the arguably even more eccentric Russian Mr. Bobinsky. After these encounters, Coraline seriously doubts that her new home can provide anything truly intriguing to her, but it does; she uncovers a secret door in the house. Walking through the door and then venturing through an eerie passageway, she discovers an alternate version of her life and existence. On the surface, this parallel reality is similar to her real life--only much better. The adults, including the solicitous Other Mother, seem much more welcoming to her. Coraline is more the center of attention there--even from the mysterious Cat. She begins to think that this Other World might be where she belongs. But when her wondrously off-kilter, fantastical visit turns dangerous and Other Mother schemes to keep her there, Coraline musters all of her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home--and save her family.

Time Out

Maintaining the gothic quirks of his debut, The Nightmare Before Christmas, but adding a welcome layer of queasy...

Like Caroline, but, jumbled up like.

ReviewsEmbargo from , 16th February, 2009

It is like Nightmare before Christmas meets Beetlejuice without the Charismatic super-lead of either picture.

superb.........................

williamsgwynfa from , 29th April, 2009

this film is superb. It is about a little girl called Coraline Jones who moves into the Pink Palace Apartments in Ashland in Oregon with her loving but work-consumed parents. While exploring the nearby forest, Coraline finds a stray black cat and a strange boy who looks after it named Wybie Lovat. She also makes friends with retired actresses Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, and an acrobat named Mr. Bobinsky. While exploring her apartment, Coraline finds a small door closed by bricks. During that night she is woken up by a buttoned eyed jumping mouse, she follows it and finds a passageway extending beyond the miniature door, which leads her to an alternate version of the house grounds called the 'Other World'. Coraline meets button-eyed doppelgängers of her mother and father, who claim to be her 'Other' parents. These figures guide her to a more luxurious and attractive version of the house and its surroundings. The Other Mother and Father celebrate her presence with delicious food, a beautiful, enchanted garden, and the affection Coraline feels she is missing in her own world. But what is the catch ? watch this great film to find out !

Oustanding Grimm Brothers like story

IFB from from York, 28th April, 2009

Coraline makes it to the UK at last with a wonderful Grimm brothers like story from Neil Gaiman, that takes you back to those wonderful scary child classics. This book is then transformed into a dark, yet vibrant world that draws you in. The 3D effects are low and in my opinion the animation doesn't need it, as the flow of the stop motion animation is more than enough for the wow factor of this film. Henry Selick does it again like he did with Nightmare before christmas, which was his film and not Tim Burton's. Tim was only brought in at the last minute for promotional effect. Return to you childhood and take a cushion. NB - may be too scary for under 8s

Not for the young!

A Customer from Borrowash, 5th May, 2009

I took 7 year old twins to see the previews in 3D. This is a very dark animation with some scarey moments. The only time the twins ever still 100% still through any film is when they are scared! Usually we have to run to the loos at least twice when we go to the cinema, this time not even once! They did laugh at the odd bit but it was just so dark that most of the time i could just see two concerned faces staring at the screen! The 3D factor was brilliant and recommend that if you get the choice do see it in 3D. I am not saying this a bad film because i dont believe it is but i strongly believe this film is only subtible for children over 10, If you liked Nightmare before Christmas you wont be disappointed. However if you want a fun, light hearted family movie for under 10s please look else where!
