Hollywood's most celebrated luminaries--behind the camera as well as in front of it--combined talents to present this epic tale of the development of the American West from the 1830s through the Civil War to the end of the century, as seen through the eyes of one pioneer family. The film, divided into three chapters--'The Civil War' (directed by John Ford), 'The Railroad' (directed by George Marshall), and 'The River, the Plains, the Outlaws' (directed by Henry Hathaway)--tells the story of the Prescotts, a spirited group of easterners who make a declaration to migrate west. When their parents are lost in a tragic river accident, Eve (Carroll Baker) and Lilith (Debbie Reynolds) go their separate ways. Eve remains on the land that took her parents, settling down with the well-intentioned Linus Rawlings (James Stewart), while Lilith becomes a singer who is courted by the conniving Cleve Van Valen (Gregory Peck) when he learns that she has inherited a fortune in California. As time passes and the Civil War takes the life of Linus, the newest generation of Prescott offspring struggles with even greater danger and loss, in the form of fierce Indians as well as family archrivals. Top-notch production values and an endless string of solid performances have earned HOW THE WEST WAS WON the well-deserved label as one of Hollywood's most revered classics.

Stunningly shot

This film is breathtaking in its scope and what we lose in characterisation is made up with some of the greatest photography in moviemaking. I have just watched the 'curved Superama simulation' on Blu Ray and it's been a remarkable viewing experience. The imagery, particularly of the fly-through scences, are of such scale and detail that it takes your breath away. After nealry 50 years the colours are vibrant and some of the huge set pieces like the buffalo stampede are staggering considering there was no CGI around. The movie tells the story of the Precott/Rawlings family across three generations during the 19th century. The film deals primarily with 3 separate facets of settling the west, the original pioneers, the California gold rush and the advent of the trans-continental railway all told through the stories of the family who are first hand witnesses to it. By the way each segment was directed by separate film-makers. Because of the pure scale of the film and it's subject matter the characters are never fully developed and we're not privy to some of the back stories that took place rather just seeing the consequences of the events of these rather than have them played out. For all that the film is a valuable but flawed history lesson (in particular the native Americans get short shift) that contains so many of the Hollywood stalwarts of the time. However, again because of the scale of the movie, this would not be a prolific role for any of them - John Wayne has only two scenes in the film. Rising star George 'Banacek' perhaps shines brightest as the grandson Zeb Rawlings.

How west was won (not like this)

Very disappointing considering the stars involved. Makes the Waltons look like the Wild Bunch.I saw a lot of films in the early 60's so i'm glad i didn't waste my pocket money on this one.
