When Leon Kaufman's latest body of work--a collection of provocative, nighttime studies of the city and its inhabitants--earns the struggling photographer interest from prominent art gallerist Susan Hoff, she propels him to get grittier and show the darker side of humanity for his upcoming debut at her downtown art space. Believing he's finally on track for success, Leon's obsessive pursuit of dark subject matter leads him into the path of a serial killer--Mahogany, the subway murderer who stalks late-night commuters, ultimately butchering them in the most gruesome ways imaginable. With his concerned girlfriend Maya fearing for his life, Leon's relentless fascination with Mahogany lures him further and further into the bowels of the subways and ultimately into an abyss of pure evil--inadvertently pulling Maya right along with him.

Dull but Slippery Bloodfest

Rip from Manchester, 7th August, 2009

Read the film summary above because that's about it really. A few buckets of 'blood' spread around a train. No depth, just effects and fake gore. What a waste of Vinnie Jones.

Step away from the meat

JediSi from , 5th March, 2009

Based on Clive Barker's classic short story, the film is about photographer Leon (Bradley Cooper), who wants to capture on film the 'true' New York City. He is given a lucky break by his best friend when he is introduced with a legendary art dealer (Brooke Shields), and accepts her advice to explore individual places more closely, in hopes of finding the image that impresses her and gets him a break in the art world. He ends up encountering strange doings during late-night subway rides, and becomes obsessed with a silent, severe butcher (Vinnie Jones) who bludgeons passengers to death on a regular basis. The movie works mainly because of its director. Ryuhei Kitamura might be the best visual stylist working in the horror genre. The scenes of suspense, intrigue, and horror are all inventively shot, while never distracting from what's actually going on. Jeff Buhler's script has quality dialog, good pacing, and is generally efficient. The greatest weakness of the film is its lead actor. Cooper lacks the charisma and intensity necessary to involve the audience fully in Leon's descent into the underworld. Vinnie is quite convincing and demonstrates his usual Glasgow kiss. Definitely one of the better films I've seen him. Good entertainment

Such a shame that this film didn't get a proper release in theatres.... It's brilliant!!! Great horror film, even though the title puts you off a bit!! Lovely and gory, which is what you want in a horror :-)

Is 21 your age or your IQ? This one's for you

Englishteacherguy from , 7th November, 2009

When I was in my twenties, I was fascinated by Clive Barker's books. When I was in my thirties, I threw them all away, because I was afraid that one of my children might read them. I like horror, but I don't like this film. It's dark, unpleasant, cruel and pointless. Clive Barker creates his own mythologies, and they have a certain quality that sets them apart from the B-movie disposability you see in some trashy horror. I think it's an age thing - When you're a kid, horror is about the morbid fascination of seeing how much unpleasantness you are tough enough to stomach. You get to a certain age and horror is about the quest to survive. One day you wake up and realise that there really are murderers out there, and it's more pleasant to think that they might be caught than to dwell on the fact that most of them aren't.
