When Leon Kaufman's latest body of work--a collection of provocative, nighttime studies of the city and its inhabitants--earns the struggling photographer interest from prominent art gallerist Susan Hoff, she propels him to get grittier and show the darker side of humanity for his upcoming debut at her downtown art space. Believing he's finally on track for success, Leon's obsessive pursuit of dark subject matter leads him into the path of a serial killer--Mahogany, the subway murderer who stalks late-night commuters, ultimately butchering them in the most gruesome ways imaginable. With his concerned girlfriend Maya fearing for his life, Leon's relentless fascination with Mahogany lures him further and further into the bowels of the subways and ultimately into an abyss of pure evil--inadvertently pulling Maya right along with him.

Dull but Slippery Bloodfest

Rip from Manchester, 7th August, 2009

Read the film summary above because that's about it really. A few buckets of 'blood' spread around a train. No depth, just effects and fake gore. What a waste of Vinnie Jones.

Step away from the meat

JediSi from , 5th March, 2009

Based on Clive Barker's classic short story, the film is about photographer Leon (Bradley Cooper), who wants to capture on film the 'true' New York City. He is given a lucky break by his best friend when he is introduced with a legendary art dealer (Brooke Shields), and accepts her advice to explore individual places more closely, in hopes of finding the image that impresses her and gets him a break in the art world. He ends up encountering strange doings during late-night subway rides, and becomes obsessed with a silent, severe butcher (Vinnie Jones) who bludgeons passengers to death on a regular basis. The movie works mainly because of its director. Ryuhei Kitamura might be the best visual stylist working in the horror genre. The scenes of suspense, intrigue, and horror are all inventively shot, while never distracting from what's actually going on. Jeff Buhler's script has quality dialog, good pacing, and is generally efficient. The greatest weakness of the film is its lead actor. Cooper lacks the charisma and intensity necessary to involve the audience fully in Leon's descent into the underworld. Vinnie is quite convincing and demonstrates his usual Glasgow kiss. Definitely one of the better films I've seen him. Good entertainment

Blackest comedy

Whipster from from Shropshire, 19th October, 2009

Vinnie Jones is awesome in easily his best role to date - he doesn't say anything just has to 'act' mean and threatening! Perfect for him! Visually this is quite impressive, great colour tones in the subway train contrasting starkly with the vast amounts of deep red gore. Special effects are dodgy in places and the narrative obviously ridiculous but this is an enjoyable bloody romp. Overall I'd consider it a really really black comedy - theres some great laugh out loud over the top sequences. If you have a dark sense of humour you'll love this! 3.5 bloody stars.
