A Charming Film And Solid Effort from Start To Finish,

crockery from from Belfast, 17th September, 2008

Although this film had all the earmarks of the dreaded stereotypical 'chick flick' and/or 'yenta-fest', I enjoyed it thoroughly, because in the end it was a charming, mature film about real life and real people, one which can be enjoyed on many levels by anyone who has a heart. The script was solid, the editing spot on, the cinematography taut (especially the close-ups), the actors all on top of their games, and the fact that all these well-known stars are showing their age (and character!) in their faces just added to the feeling of genuine emotion and augmented the audience ability to empathize with the characters. I went in not expecting much and came out EXTREMELY satisfied... all the more impressed because it was Ms. Hunt's big screen directorial and writing debut.

awful

A Customer from London, 29th January, 2009

What a mess of a movie. Such and amazing cast of actors but the script is just so stupid with no direction that you can't help but fast forward until you get sick of doing that that you just switch it off and send it back half way through. What a total waste of my time. Just don't even bother with it.

Watch This..

GaryUK from , 11th March, 2009

After reading some of the reviews on here I was worried that this movie would be a disappointment. So much so that we waited over a week before we finally got round to watching it. But all I can say is that this movie was great. I'm not sure what everyone else saw when they put the disc in their machines but I saw a wonderfully directed piece with a great cast. The usually dull Colin Firth gave a nice performance and Bette Midler gave a perfectly timed performance. Serious with the occasional comedic touch. Please watch this movie if you don't mind a leisurely stroll through other people's lives and you don't need car chases, blood or gore in every movie you watch.

Comedy or Drama?

A Customer from Redhill, 15th March, 2010

That's precisely its problem. Doesn't know what it wants to be! You can just imagine Helen Hunt saying: 'work is slow these days - I think I'll direct a film!!' (OK, she had to find money too). I think I'll get a few famous people, a real 'one off' - Salmon Rushdie (what the hell was he doing in this movie?) - and then....well, yes, I too want to snog that sexy Colin Firth, why not, if I pay him enough!! It was a bit of a self-portrayal of Helen Hunt, at times really weird in her reactions, and will be the perfect candidate for Channel 5's afternoon movie!

Then she found me

I thought this was going to be a heart-warming chick flick but was sadly disappointed. There did not seem to be any synergy or real sincerity between the actors. Colin Firth as the love interest of Helen Hunt - lacked charm. Very difficult to believe that Bette Midler is the long lost birth mother of Helen Hunt. They have no physical attributes suggesting a blood relationship. In fact, the actress who portrayed Hunt's adoptive mother looked like her. Wouldn't recommend unless you have time to spare.

Don't do it to yourself.....

A Customer from London, 25th February, 2010

Unfortunately this film is so forgettable that I forgot I had already seen it and requested it again. It took about 3 minutes for the memory to set in - that I had already wasted a very precious hour or two of my life watching this slow moving, self serving lot of drivel.....Helen Hunt really needs to eat something, and Colin Firth seriously let's himself down. I don't think I have ever loved watching Bette Midler so there is no surprise there....

Disjointed tosh

A Customer from London, 31st January, 2010

A lovely novel by Elinor Lipman is marred by a jarring, disjointed treatment that flicks from scene to scene without any clear explanation of characters' backstory or motivation. The script is dire: several characters struggle for words and you wonder if this is the scriptwriter's limitation, rather than that of the characters. Bette Midler is the only enjoyable aspect of this film; although Colin Firth puts on a reasonable show. One last thing: what on earth is Salman Rushdie doing in this film? Is is an ironic parallel to his novels: incomprehensible writer seeks incomprenensible film?
