Director Robert Zemeckis ('The Polar Express') and graphic novelist Neil Gaiman (the 'Sandman' series) team up for this highly anticipated, performance-capture adaptation of the Old English epic poem. When the young warrior Beowulf (Ray Winstone) travels to a neighboring kingdom and slays the monster Grendel (Crispin Glover), he is hailed as a hero. But before long, Beowulf must face an even deadlier foe. Grendel's mother (Angelina Jolie), who seeks vengeance for the loss of her son. The film also stars Anthony Hopkins as King Hrothgar, Robin Wright Penn as Queen Wealtheow and John Malkovich as Unferth.

Beowulf

A Customer from Halesowen, 21st July, 2008

There is lots to enjoy in this adaptation of Beowulf. The visuals are stunning at times and the story entertains with action, wit and poignancy in equal measure. The Polar Express style motion-capture people take a bit of getting used to although they are an upgrade on the aformentioned movie. The characters almost look real at times, which is faint praise I suppose, but gives you an idea what to expect. The payoff is that they achieve shots and stunts virtually impossible with live actors, even on a green screen, and really pull no punches when it comes to dizzying action sequences. Also, If you are a fan of all things dragonish (as I am) this film is worth it for the last 20 minutes alone. It is worth mentioning that this is easily the most graphic and gory '12' I have ever seen, probably getting away with it due to 'not being real', and also contains a fair amount of innuendo and nudity. Not really for kids.
