The Umbrella Corporation's Vault, a secret facility located deep below Raccoon City, is sabotaged and a deadly virus is stolen. In the mansion that conceals another entrance to the Vault, Alice (Milla Jovovich) lies on the shower floor, naked except for the shower curtain. She can't remember anything but, as she dresses, she recalls memory fragments. Then, masked intruders burst through the windows. They tell Alice she is a Corporation agent living undercover in the mansion. She goes with them into the Vault to discover who sabotaged it. As they penetrate the Vault, trying to get to the Red Queen, the computer system at the heart of the facility, Alice and her confederates face many horrors--dead bodies suspended in water, blood-red flayed dogs, flesh-eating zombies, and 'the Licker', a dynamically mutating monster.

Basing RESIDENT EVIL on the popular video game, writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson delivers a tense, exciting science-fiction/horror film. Anderson and director of photography David Johnson shot the movie in rich silver-and-black, so that its few bursts of colour are striking--like the image of the blonde Milla Jovovich in a very short crimson dress, with a trailing veil, and black boots dragging a silver axe behind her.

Radio Times

Paul Anderson makes amends for his lacklustre Mortal Kombat here with another video game adaptation. A single-minded tale of genetic research facility workers accidentally turned into ravenous zombies, it's a relentless throat-grabber. Hinging on grisly special effects, breakneck pacing and hard-hitting fight sequences, Anderson at least racks up the tension to claustrophobic levels. It really is like watching a video game come to life — should that appeal — as Milla Jovovich and her commandos move through progressively more dangerous levels to wipe out the undead. As with the film's source material, there's no enduring substance here. However, the nerve-jangling score, co-composed by shock rocker Marilyn Manson, gives it an extra frenetic edge.

Done the game proud

JediSi from , 18th August, 2007

When I heard that my favourite PSX game was going to be made into a film, I cringed. This could go horribly wrong. Fortunately, I needn't have worried as I booked my cinema tickets. The film based around the T-virus producing Umbrella Corporation sees the mainframe computer the Red Queen shut down to contain un outbreak of the T-virus. They think she's gone mad and killed everyone. They send in a security team to shut her down. They succeed, although they hadn't realised that shutting her down would open all the doors (common sense obviously not their strong point) and then the fun begins. Rock solid performances from all the cast (especially Milla Jovovich) with good special effects did not disappoint and did the game justice. The security laser scene being particularly memorable. Just one bite, one scratch from these creatures is sufficient. And then, you become one of them.

Starts off really promising

... and keeps the plot line in keeping with the Playstation games. There's some really fab grisly moments to keep gore fans happy, but as soon as the computer animated monster appears the film slips downwards and loses whatever credibility it tried to cling to. Watch if bored.

EXCELLENT!

A Customer from Falkirk, 11th February, 2005

An excellent movie! I have never played the PS2 game (mainly because i freak out and panic when something in a video game starts to chase me!) so i never had any expectations to begin with but this movie was far better than i'd expected. I wasnt sure how frightening this movie was going to be to start with and sat with the remote in my hand, ready to turn it off at any moment, but the movie turned out to be closer to an action movie than a horror! Still I thoroughly enjoyed it and a week later I just had to have a copy of my own. If your into zombie action movies this is definately one to watch!

An excellent film. Not quite in keeping with the playstation game of the same name, but I find the story line much inproved in this game being made into a film.
It is enjoyable to watch (for young and old alike) if you like action films.
I was impressed viewing it as it turned out much better than I expected it to.

I'm a fan of these movies, watch them, they're great. Plenty of underlying politics, corporate greedy assholes etc. Morality with a brilliant dose of scaring and gore.

Its got zombie dogs (do not stroke)

Whytespirit from , 20th July, 2009

Resident Evil is a Paul Anderson movie based on a computer game. And that was itself highly derivative (viz: George A Romero and James Cameron films), it hasn't really got an original idea or moment in its entire running time. This is a film with much-improved, edited, photographed and directed version of the 1980's zombie films. Its got amazing kung fu, evil corporations, a gang of hard clone like soldiers (save for Michelle Rodriguez as the secondary tough chick), an underground scientific compound, a tyrannical computer, CGI mutants and even zombie dogs. It's a good film with action-packed special fx and atmosphere but there's nothing new here directors in 30 years time will want to steal.
