Radio Times

Brilliantly scripted, atmospherically chilling and seat-edged suspenseful right up to its masterful shock ending, this hard-hitting psychological horror concerns a group of workers hired to clear an abandoned insane asylum of asbestos in one week. As the crew, all harboring dark secrets of their own, is drawn deeper into the mysteries surrounding the imposing building — patient abuse, medieval medical procedures and demonic possession rumours — the grueling pressures mount to complete their assignment. Soon an awful truth emerges, triggered by playing a case history tape marked “Session 9”, and someone cracks under the murderous strain. Evocatively shot on High Definition Digital Video and graced by superb ensemble performances, especially from Peter Mullan and Josh Lucas, director Brad Anderson's cautionary tale of psyche-infection is a stunning success on every character-driven, grimly realistic and spine-tingling front.

endless wait

arun from liverpool, 25th February, 2005

I thought something ghastly and spectacular is about to come near the finale, but was disappointed that nothing came forward after waiting patiently for the first one hour through the slow pace. I share the opinion of most of the reviewers in that i was disappointed and this film had the potential for being a first class psychological thriller but lost it somewhere in the middle. I couldnt make up the connection between the psychotherapy sessions of the inmate of the hospital and the main plot. The lead characters were talking about inanities most of the time and the last 15 - 20 minutes was reserved for being mindlessly violent

Waste of time!

Andrew Brodie from Huddersfield, UK, 9th July, 2005

Looked like it was going to be a corker but turned out to be very lame! Started slow and I hoped that it was building to something good, it didn't! Great Idea ruined by badley written plot which unfolds to no suprises or interest! Sorry.....

Compelling thriller with flawed ending.

Northernsky from , 14th January, 2004

Session 9 is a superior thriller, atmospheric and very well acted but after the promise of its scene setting and one pulse quickening sequence it resorts to cliché and the conclusion despite its horrific power, fails to provide the startling culmination that would make it a Session that would bear repeated visits.

It took too long to get going!

Titch1977 from , 15th September, 2009

I agree with the numerous reviews of this film that it took far to long to get into the plot. When you do get into the plot you wait for the ending to unfold in an exciting twist. It does not deliver. In fact it fails to deliver so spectacularly that you hear yourself saying 'Huh?'. I got the storyline and understood where it was supposed to lead you, but it just didn't give me any reason. You were just expected to accept it. This film also kept going off on a tangent somewhere else and then trying to fit the pieces back together. My advice is to watch the trailer, because that is as good as it gets I'm afraid.
