Daily Telegraph

Narratives and places are secondary to the dreamy, bitter-sweet tone Wong is so keen to evoke, and with which, like a scent one might spray on too liberally, he saturates every scene

Time Out

Wong Kar-Wais preferred mode is recapitulation: take that song, that scene, that shot, that line, and play it again,...

Not what I expected...

A Customer from York, 29th July, 2008

I'm a fan of Norah Jones' music and I wanted to like this movie...but just couldn't quite bring myself to do so. You see, it's not that this movie is particularly bad/offensive to the eyes and ears, it's just that it's an incredibly simplistic and predictable film which just meanders along with almost no purpose. Ms Jones, is a singer and she should stick to that as her day job. Granted, I've seen worse performances, but she just did nothing for me as an actress. It's quite obviously they gave her the part because it would be 'something different' and it gave the film makers the excuse to use her music as a subtle backdrop to the movie. But really, the role wasn't a challenging one and they could have got anyone to play this plain Jane character and still used Norah Jones' music if they wanted to. Jude Law...yeah, seen him play this role before. Obviously we saw less of him than Jones but I found myself warming to his character a little more. Weisz....the less said the better.. Portman... yeah, ok, your character was mildly entertaining...but got a bit annoying after a while. All-in-all, this film is about the beginning and the end. About Jones travelling all across the country to get over her ex boyfriend and then realising she wants to be with Law...obviously enough. The middle 2/3rds and the characters/stories contained therein seem to me nothing more than a tool to extend the movie to a length where you can get away with convincing people to pay money for it (nobody goes to see 30min movies in the cinemas...). Nothign really happens and you never really care about the people involved. In summary, I wasn't left thinking that I had wasted a couple of hours of my life... but I perhaps could have done more constructive things with it. If you're a Norah Jones fan, you may like to watch it out of sheer curiosity...but don't expect cinematic brilliance.

A film for the wife

Bladez from from Stoke-On-Trent, 21st July, 2008

Very predictable, slow in places but my wife enjoyed it which is what mattered most. Nothing more than a promotional machine for Norah Jones.

Mixed opinion.

There's a lot to love and plenty to dislike about this film. First, it looks absolutely amazing, the cinematography and especially the colours looked great on the blu-ray version. I liked the themes of the film; finding and developing yourself as a person, time, love, sadness and hope. I am a big fan of Wong Kar-Wei so instinctively I may like these aspects of the film. However, the script and dialogue doesn't nearly do justice to what he is attempting with the narrative and visuals. The acting also falls short despite some great actors on display; Norah Jones is alright and although not a fan I kinda actually feel sorry for Jude Law with the dialogue he's been given. Even the re-occurrence of the Norah Jones song in the film doesn't sit right to me, it comes in and out without ever feeling part of the film. I'm sure a lot has been lost in translation here, and it must have been hard making this film not in a first language but sadly a lot of the film comes over as a bit sickly and corny. Worth watching though, especially if you're a fan as there's still a lot of positives to take from the film if you look beyond the guff.

Nice performances from Law and Porteman, and a very natural debut from Jones. However, the whole thing was rather dull!

Bad Bad film

A Customer from London, 8th December, 2008

I do not like to apply good or bad onto a film because I believe it is always subject to taste but in this case I felt it was a real waste of time watching this. Seemed to be more of a moving photo as opposed to a film with any depth.
