Meek, owlish writer Felix (George Segal) and strident, catty prostitute Doris (Barbra Streisand) live in the same apartment building. His incessant typing bothers her; her gentlemen callers bother him. When Felix reports Doris's rowdy activity to their landlord, she gets evicted. The free-spirited Doris then forces her way into Felix's apartment, as well as his heart. The Streisand/Segal pairing makes for classic comedy and heartwarming romance. |
Barbra Streisand plays against type, as well as actually letting her co-star, George Segal, get a word in edgeways, in this slick adaptation of Bill Manhoff's Broadway hit. She's an eccentric hooker who moves in with bookish neighbour Segal who had her evicted from her own flat in this Neil Simon-esque comedy. Director Herbert Ross and scriptwriter Buck Henry give the raucous original an extra glow of warmth and Streisand and Segal are so good together you wonder why they never did a sequel.

Halliwell's Film Guide
Wacky, bawdy double act which starts promisingly but outstays its welcome. A solid step forward in permissiveness, with kinky behaviour as well as four-letter words.
