Smart People stars Dennis Quaid as Professor Lawrence Wetherhold - an imperiously brilliant, monumentally self-possessed intellectual giant. However when it comes to solving problems relating to love and family, he's completely lost! His teenaged daughter (Ellen Page) is an acid-tongued overachiever who follows in her father's misery-loving footsteps, whilst his adopted brother (Thomas Haden Church) has perfected the art of freeloading. When his brother shows up unexpectedly for an extended stay at just about the same time as he accidentally encounters his former student Janet (Sarah Jessica Parker), the circumstances cause him to stir from his deep, deep freeze, with often comical, sometimes heartbreaking, consequences for himself and everyone around him.

Absolutly Awful!

sherlock2040 from from London, 19th August, 2008

Officially the first film I've walked out of. It's a complete pile of utterly pretentious toss with irritatingly moronic characters who are supposed to be 'smart' (at one point the 17yr old girl asks this other girl what's it like to be stupid!!!)... in fact the 17yr old daughter dresses and acts like a grandmother! I walked out at the scene where she was talking about having chosen the wine because it contemplates the ham she'd cooked... she got the recipe of the Internet and translated it from old French into English - whilst giving us a lecture about the history of the recipe!!! AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGH!!! It's not smart, it's stupid and desperately trying to be witty. Complete waste of Ellen Page's talent.

Good Film

MW200378 from , 30th September, 2008

Surely the point of the film is that although the characters are academically smart they are not smart when it come to managing their emotions and relationships with each other. To suggest that it's bad film on the grounds that you didn't agree with how one of the characters behaved is the most retarded thing I've ever heard. I didn't like the Germans in Schindler's list but it still a good film. By no means brilliant but relaxing and enjoyable. But hey... what do I know? I'm an idiot.

Disappointing

Rima from from Cambridge, 25th September, 2008

Ellen Page is as good as she could be in this poor film. I awaited it's release looking forward to the new film with the star of Juno in it but this was just dull. I didn't care about any of the characters in it. It was just very disappointing.

I knew it was going to be pants when I realised, Sarah horse faced Jesicca Parker, was in it. Its more like an episode of some middle class american tosh series.Id prefer to watch friends, and thats pants too.

Very Very Slow

Jocasta from Nottingham, England, 2nd March, 2010

I have to say i was disappointed with this film. It had all the ingredients to be a amusing yet deep film however it did not deliver. I tediously watched the whole way through this film as i wanted to get my monies worth but i have to say i did not laugh once, feel for any character once, relate to anything once, or even think the plot was interesting once. I would seriously tell people to reconsider if they are thinking about veiwing this film

Smart People's Comedy!

chiccinbum from , 22nd February, 2010

This was really funny in a very quiet way. Like Little Miss Sunshine, it had a quirky heartwarming edge to it and some very likeable central characters but essentially a small story with not much in the way of events. As in Juno, Ellen Page realy develops slowly as a character and keeps the movie simmering. I would really recommend this to anyone who enjoys in indie films.

Smart but not funny. Watchable but not a great night in. Was beginning to wonder when it would end.
