David Fincher's (FIGHT CLUB, SE7EN) adaptation of the Robert Graysmith book masterfully transports viewers to the Bay Area in the 1960s and '70s by drawing on actual case files from the notoriously unsolved Zodiac killer mystery. As a murderer with seemingly random targets starts sending terrifying threats and cryptic codes to police and publishers all around San Francisco, fear and paranoia descend on the city. Through slow pacing, Fincher creates an effectively chilling atmosphere in which he spins a thick web of character-driven plotlines. Early scenes depicting the Zodiac's first-known murders vividly capture the victim's fear and agony and will leave viewers haunted. When the Zodiac’s ciphers arrive at the San Francisco Chronicle, they spark the interest of Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), a young cartoonist with a penchant for puzzles. As the former Boy Scout earnestly tries to decode the messages, eccentric reporter Paul Avery approaches the case from a career-boosting angle. Meanwhile, a string of investigators from four jurisdictions carry on a complex and unsatisfying search for the elusive killer. Inspectors Dave Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) and Bill Armstrong (Anthony Edwards) at times collide with Avery and Graysmith, whose interest in the case extends long after most have given up. Even at two-and-a-half hours in length, this dense murder mystery should manage to keep its audience riveted throughout. Paired with stellar performances from Ruffalo, Downey, Gyllenhaal, and countless others, a clever script produces well-developed characters, and the film's art direction, music, and costumes all combine to create an authentic sense of time and place. The sombre tone of the atmospheric thriller gives the film a documentary-like aesthetic at times, lending weight to the story’s facts while never relying on cheap tricks. Unlike murder mysteries such as THE BLACK DAHLIA, ZODIAC invites viewers to develop theories of their own, allowing them to come to their own conclusions.

A vastly intricate and dazzling drama... It spins your head in a new way, luring you into a vortex and then deeper still, fascinating as much for what we don't know as what we do

Just solve the crime already!!

Dragilex from , 27th January, 2009

I am a fan of David Fincher's work but this for me was a very uneventful 2 hours 45 minutes of my life. There is a good story in here somewhere... During the entire running time the zodiac case is being solved by varying police departments and a couple of reporters very little happens. Sure there's a couple of murders, there's a bit of detective work but it's all very meagre and dull. And don't expect any tension or any thrills, it's all quite tame compared to Fincher's other films. Even the end was a bit of a letdown for me. Rent this if you fancy watching an extremely long episode of Columbo.

Entertaining coz its true

TheOrs from , 20th October, 2008

I'm surprised that I enjoyed this so much seeing as docu-movies are not really my cup of tea. Desptie the fact that it is so long, there is a lot to like about this film and if crime dramas are your thing it comes highly recommended. Although it is pretty slow moving it is also very gripping and something you will want to watch through to the end. However, it is not as good as Seven.

Surprisingly suspenseful

crockery from from Belfast, 29th June, 2008

I admit, I was skeptical that a movie could be made about a 10+ year long murder investigation with very few actual murders and no arrests. I was even more skeptical that it could actually be funny, which I'd read in a review was the case. All my doubts were for nothing, David Fincher has crafted yet another excellent film. Here's the best way I can convey how good it is. I did not go to the bathroom once, in the nearly three hours of running time. Wonderful acting, a really well done script that is true to the actual events and characters involved, a lot of dry humor which adds a much needed levity to an otherwise intense drama. The authentic dated look of the film serves to heighten the sense that you are watching real events that happened to real people. If you are at all a fan of true crime, this film is a must see.

Suprisingly Good

Adam Brown from Gravesend, England, UK, 27th February, 2010

This film was not what I expected in the slightest, the impression I got was that this was kind of a horror but it's not. Instead it's a very clever comedy / drama that pulled me in & kept me awake until 1am to finish watching it. The cast is superb, the acting excellent and the story line sucks you in to the point where if your wife was to phone letting you know she'd gone into labour, you'd still end up watching the end of this film before you leave!

Disappointing

PKTV from , 25th February, 2010

As a Fincher fan I was Really disappointed with this film, largely due to the awful soundtrack - we couldn't hear what was going on for the first half of the film. I kept changing my speaker settings until I realised that it was how the film was recorded! Despite being a true story, it never really grips you. Not a patch on Se7en or Fight Club. Average.
